Analysis of Low-level Wind Shear Events in Southwest China

  • This article used pilot reports about low- level wind shear events in the southwest airports, NCEP reanalysis data, airport Doppler radar and automatic observation data from March 2008 to September 2011. According the statistical analysis and discussion, there were more low- level wind shear events occurred in spring and summer, especially the most serious low- level events occurred at Kunming airport and the thermal low pressure and low level jet are the main impact system. There were 68% of wind shear events related them. The reason of low level wind shear occurred in Lhasa mainly were the trough effects. The quasi- stationary front was the main impact system in Guiyang airport. One of the main factors affecting the Chengdu airport was gust front triggered by thunderstorm. The Doppler radar can be used to detect and warn the low- level wind shear events at Chengdu airport.
