Glacier Change Characteristics in the Boduizangbo Basin of Southeastern Tibet over the Past 40 Years

Glacier Change Characteristics in the Boduizangbo Basin of Southeastern Tibet over the Past 40 Years

  • Based on the multi-source satellite remote sensing data from 1986 to 2023, glacier areas were extracted using visual interpretation. Combined with terrain and climate data, the variation characteristics and influencing factors of three typical modern glaciers (Zepu Glacier, Zhuxigou Glacier and Baiyugou Glacier) in the Boduizangbu Basin of southeastern Tibet over the past 40 years were analyzed. The results show that the three glaciers were in a state of obvious retreat, the ice storage and material balance were in a state of reduction and negative balance, and the altitude at the end of the glacier was also significantly improved. The low slope area of the three glaciers decreased, while the high slope area increased. In 2023, the area of the Zepu Glacier and Baiyugou Glacier below 4000 m elevation was nearly zero. The correlation between the annual average temperature and the glacier area in the Boduizangbu Basin was very significant. Both of them showed significant mutations in 1998, 2002 and 2003. The temperature rise may be one of the main factors causing the glacier change in the Boduizangbu Basin.
