Abstract:
In this paper, the frequency, rainfall process and rainfall ability of various cumulus clouds are analyzed using the ground observation data from 4 meteorological stations in Lhasa area during raining season from May to September of 1981 to 2010. The preliminary discussion for cloud system suitable for artificial rainfall operation in Lhasa area using antiaircraft gun (rockets) is also made from satellite cloud image, radar map and visual inspection. The result shows that annual average rainfall caused by cumulus cloud is over 40 days in Lhasa area with maximum rainfall frequency of cumulus clouds along with fracto- nimbus (Fn) . Average rainfall process of cumulus clouds is accounting for 52. 6% in total rainfall process and its rainfall amount is 54. 8% of total rainfall in different counties of Lhasa. The rainfall process caused by cumulus cloud is over half of total rainfall during raining season, which generally produces light, light to moderate rain and the probability of producing heavy rain and storm is very small. Therefore, there are not only great artificial rainfall potentials but also more opportunities to implement artificial rainfall seeding in precipitating cumulus. Cumulus cloud system which is suitable for artificial rainfall operations based on their contribution to rainfall amount in order is cumulonimbus with fracto- nimbus (Cb + Fn), mixed stratocumulus with fractocumulus (Sc + Fc), cumulonimbus (Cb) and stratocumulus (Sc).
